In mind-body medicine, the mind and body are not seen as separately functioning entities, but as one functioning unit. The mind and emotions are viewed as influencing the body, as the body, in turn, influences the mind and emotions. A complex network-the stress-response system-involving the nervous, endocrine, and immune systems enables this communication to occur among the mind, emotions, and body, allowing this one functioning unit to adapt to oncoming challenges and stay in balance. Mind-body medical techniques address how to influence this stress-response system positively to help an individual become more adaptive to life's challenges and to achieve health, balance, and well-being. These techniques include eliciting the relaxation response; cognitive behavioral strategies to improve beliefs, thoughts, attitudes, and emotions; appropriate lifestyle modifications involving sleep, nutrition, and exercise; and developing stronger social-support networks. These techniques are effective for treating psychologic and physical illnesses, especially when they are caused by, or exacerbated by, stress.
