There is a long history of the therapeutic use of plants and gardens in the care of patients with both physical and mental illnesses.1 Outdoor gardens have been suggested as a means of improving morale, self-confidence, cooperation, social interaction, and physical functioning for older adults. In Japan an intervention, Shinrin-yoku ("forest bathing"), recommended by medical providers, is based on a leisurely stroll in a forest or garden. Researchers have demonstrated that Shinrin-yoku has the ability to increase immunoglobulins and decrease depression.
