Leonardo began his studies of nature as a boy by wandering about the Tuscan countryside around Vinci, where he was born. He had enormous respect for nature and curiosity about it all his life. His advice to pupils was clear: 'Painter, you know you cannot be good if you are not a master universal enough to imitate with your art every kind of natural form'.
