Small courtyards and grand gardens won the judges' praise at annual domestic landscaping awards. The very best in professional landscaping was recognised last week in what turned out to be the most hotly contested awards in the Association of Professional Landscapers' history. The trade body's awards were presented at the Horticultural Trades Association conference last week by Mary Reynolds, a designer who won a gold medal for her show garden, A Celtic Sanctuary, at this year's Chelsea Flower Show. When the McClean family, of Solihull, redeveloped their house on feng shui principles, they wanted the front garden to reflect similar values. They called in Notcutts Landscapes, also of Solihull, to revamp their garden and the resulting work won the Front Garden category. Feng shui has five elements - water, metal, fire, wood and earth - and these were incorporated into the project, which involved removing the existing lawn and creating a stream running towards the house.
