Glasshouse horticulture in the Netherlands has stiff targets to meet on resource use, while slim margins mean there is pressure to maximise yield from those resources at every turn, including in the substrate. This is prompting stone wool to make advances in glasshouse salad growing, according to Vincent Kuijvenhoven, export manager for Grodan. one of the main suppliers of the medium under its Rockwool brand. "You can steer the growing— the EC [electrical conductivity], water content—much more precisely than with coir, and that's what the high-tech glasshouses want," he tells Horticulture Week.
