21st Century Corbett: Maritime strategy and naval policy for the modern era

There will be few readers who do not know the name Sir Julian Stafford Corbett (1854-1922). He was one of the most influential civilian writers on maritime strategy in the early years of the twentieth century. Trained as a lawyer, extremely well connected and wealthy, he as able to devote himself to the study of naval history and the lessons it held for contemporary maritime strategy. He became deeply involved in both the education of naval officers and as a public voice for the navy. He defended Sir John Fisher against rivals in the service and was the most rigorous supporter of maritime policy against senior army officers who were pressing for Britain to commit itself to raising a mass army to fight on the continent of Europe.
