Implacable Foes: War in the Pacific, 1944-1945

The focus of this book is on military operations in what became the final year of the Pacific War, from the late spring of 1944 until the Japanese surrender in August 1945. For much of this time the United States' Joint Chiefs of Staff had to assume that fighting would continue into 1946, and that assault landings by conventional forces would suffer extremely heavy casualties. There could be no certainty that atomic bombs would prove to be effective weapons, and only a select few were even aware of their development before President Truman approved their operational use.
