Glued Stones on Top of Flowerpots

I have never liked seeing flowerpots with small stones glued on top of the soil and up against the plant. How do you water these plants unless they are set in a pan of water? A lot of these type pots have no drainage holes. How is the plant growth affected by the glued stones? Does the glue itself affect the plant and or the soil? What type of glue is used? Why do the greenhouses that supply these types of plants do it?
