WHEN YOU THINK OF PROFESSIONALS WHO ARE IN THE business of driving costs down, lawyers don't naturally spring to mind. After all, the words "lawyer" and "affordable" sit together about as naturally as "Toronto Maple Leafs" and "Stanley Cup champions." But Cognition LLP, a Toronto-based law firm that opened its Calgary office last year, is aiming to change that perception. That's not the only thing it's trying to change, either. After all, its business model is premised on challenging the very nature of the way law is practiced -and paid for - in Canada.
