What does today's safety profession look like? Has its status - and earning power - been boosted by the shift in safety climate brought in by the 2016 sentencing guideline for health and safety offences, or is it struggling to command resources in a constrained economic climate? Is it wedded to tried and tested ideas, or looking to experiment with new thinking? Does its gender and ethnic profile match the workforce it is seeking to protect, or is it forever at risk of being seen as a narrow interest group? These are some of the questions that Health and Safety at Work's Face of the Profession sought to answer. While no survey can ever claim to be wholly reliable, its base of 993 respondents does give it a good basis of authority.
