New research into the costs borne by construction employers due to occupational health failings has calculated an overall annual burden of ?848m, including ?646m for musculoskeletal disorders, representing 76% of the total. The research, by a team at Loughborough University on behalf of the Institution of Civil Engineers, was based on ?xist-ing data and analysis. Additional round-table sessions were conducted with major contractors to distil the direct costs they bore, plus indirect costs such as backfilling for absent staff.
