Following our feature on local authority regulatory enforcement (March issue, p 20), we asked readers to share their experiences of inspection visits by HSE, HSENI or local authority inspectors. Certainly, the survey tapped into a sense that health and safety would benefit from more visible and effective enforcement: 52% of respondents thought that current levels were "far too low" (see bar chart, right). Asked how enforcement compared to the levels seen 10 years ago, 43% thought it was "less rigorous", although 19% conversely found it "more rigorous".
