Survey of the European yarn fairs for spring/summer 2021

The atmosphere at the European yam fairs for spring/summer 2021 was overshadowed by economic uncertainties affecting the whole of the textile and fashion industry.It was also overshadowed by the outbreak of COVID-19,which subsequently led to the cancellation of trade fairs and conferences worldwide.Adding to these troubles,the Italian yarn industry performed particularly poorly in 2019,and sales of wool,cotton and linen yarns fell by 5.8%.Despite these challenges and uncertainties,the organisers of yarn fairs are continuing to expand the numbers of fairs staged,and Premiere Vision,in particular,has announced the hosting of a new event to be held in China during November 2020.Natural fibres are important for the spring/summer 2021 season,and many spinners are focusing on cotton,linen and hemp.However,man-made cellulosic fibres are also key,and are being used in several creative fibre blends.Other key fibres for the season include alpaca,cashmere and wool,which are being used in fine yams for summer knitwear.Environmental sustainability remains important,and spinners are increasingly using fibres which are traceable and have been sourced responsibly.Spinners are also working to improve the environmental sustainability of their operations,and are taking different approaches in order to achieve this.Many are focusing on the utilisation of fibres derived from recycled waste materials while others are improving the environmental sustainability of their production processes.In terms of colour,natural tones and pastel shades are important for spring/summer 2021,and these are accompanied by vibrant hues which include summery tones of apple green,azure blue,coral,fuchsia pink,and orange.Innovative design effects are also important for the season,and spinners are utilising techniques such as washed effects,shibori effects,and tie-dye effects.Additionally,sparkling details are important,and these have been achieved through the use of sequins and metallic highlights.Also,fancy yams remain important,prime examples being tape yarns,boucle yarns and yarns with rich textures.
