The application of the procedure for the selection of a piston compressor was presented in Parts 8.1 and 8.2 of this series. Here, the first part of an example for the selection of a centrifugal compressor is discussed. Except for the addition of a few practical considerations, the tools needed for selecting and sizing a centrifugal compressor have been established in the preceding parts. The procedure outlined is based on a conventional multistage compressor used in process duty. When dealing with integrally geared and expander driven compressors modifications regarding head per impeller and head coefficient must be made.
