One kind of pump frequently used in the food industry is the lobe pump. Lobe pumps are a kind of rotary positive displacement pump in which fluid is carried between rotor lobe surfaces and the pump casing. External timing gears offset the rotation of each rotor so that the lobes do not contact each other. Lobe pumps are available in bi-wing, tri-lobe, and multilobe configurations (see Figure 1 for an example of a tri-lobe pump). The number of lobes on each rotor determines the configuration of the pump and also the pumping characteristics. The greater the number of lobes, the less the pump output will pulsate. However, pumps with fewer lobes will handle larger solids and high viscosity flows better than pumps with a greater number of lobes.
