Pipe coatings defy sub-zero

Thomas Stark, Borealis (Austria), Regis Dekoker, Mulheim Pipecoatings (Germany), and Markus Betz, Salzgitter Mannesmann Forschung GmbH (Germany), report their findings from tests on polyolefin coatings at low temperatures. Three-layer polyolefin coatings have been successfully used for decades to prevent corrosion of steel pipelines. Key benefits of such coatings - subsequently referred to here as 3LPO coatings - beyond the passive corrosion protection of steel pipes, are their ability to withstand loads occurring during handling and transportation. Today, 3LPO coatings are the most commonly used anti-corrosion coatings for high-pressure and transmission steel pipelines in the world.
