Onshore pipeline route selection and construction methodology are of vital importance in linear structure projects such as pipelines. Each country has its own regulatory system, permits, local constraints and environmental issues and, as evidenced in several international projects, opposition and protests against cross country onshore pipeline construction are common. Failure to apply adequate route assessment criteria for pipeline route selection or pipeline construction techniques can lead to environmental destruction beyond the acceptable limits. This article focuses on recent non-conventional pipeline routing design and installation methodologies, and describes some of the challenges faced by Saipem over the past few years on various projects around the world.
