The open-cast and underground mine maps are generally established by conventional surveys like total stations; however, the low point density often results in low accuracy maps. That is why in this study, terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) was performed to make high definition maps. The objective of this study is to assess the practicability of applied GeoMax Zoom 300 equipment for establishing high definition mapping in certain Vietnam's coal mines with adverse conditions affecting measurement results. The accuracy of the above device was assessed when compared with measured results from total station data. The results from two case studies at Coc Sau open-cast and Khe Cham underground coal mines (Vietnam) show the coordinate accuracy of 0.6 to 6.7 mm in the range of 4 to 75 m at Coc Sau open-pit mine, and 0.8 to 3.6 mm in the range of 4 to 25 m at Khe Cham underground mine. Besides, the longest distances measured by GeoMax Zoom 300 are only 75 m at the open-pit mine and 25 m at the underground mine, respectively.
