Gas still has a bright future as a partner for renewables amid the accelerating energy transition — at least outside Europe — according to CEOs and business leaders at the inaugural Energy Intelligence Forum last week. Underscoring the belief, LNG and renewables have become Total's twin strategy pillars, while Exxon Mobil and Chevron are mirroring their European peers in giving greater weight to gas. But there are risks for gas. As companies reshape strategy for a net-zero world, they need to bear a few things in mind, the Forum heard. Among the key themes: Gas has to be greener. It has to be affordable. Producers need to become more agile. Upstream portfolios must be cost-and carbon-effi-cient. Customers should be at the heart of strategy.
