Asia Ingests More LNG Despite Pandemic

Asian buyers imported more LNG in the first quarter of 2020,even as the Covid-19 pandemic crippled downstream gas demand from industry and power utilities.The gains were fueled largely by the start of new term contracts in South Korea,the world's third-largest LNG importer after Japan and China.In Northeast Asia,Japan,China,South Korea and Taiwan together brought in over 53 million tons of LNG in the first three months of the year,a 3.5% rise from a year earlier.Emerging buyers Thailand,Singapore and Malaysia collectively bought around 3.25 million tons,a 55% surge from a year back,according to customs and Refinitiv Eikon ship-tracking data.
