Left trailing on the track, Andrew Chapple investigates the first of various ways to improve the traction of his 300 hp GTI Edition 30, to help put all that power down more effectively... THERE WAS A time when 200 PS was widely regarded as the maximum power output that a front-wheel-drive car could handle without suffering from excessive torque steer and wasteful wheelspin. However, the Mk 5 Golf GTI Edition 30 came along with a thumping 230 FS, transmitted through just its front tyres and while it did get ASR traction control as standard, all this would do was cut the power when slip was sensed, all too often, even during normal road use.
