Successful treatment of canine open cervix-pyometra with Yun-Nan-Pai-Yao, a Chinese herbal preparation.

Nineteen bitches in Mexico with pyometra were treated with Yun-Nan-Pai-Yao, a Chinese herbal preparation (composed of Panax ginseng var. notoginseng, Saussurea radix, Dioscorea opposita, D. nipponica, Erodium stephanianum, Geranium wilfordii, Alpinia officinarum and cattle bile). All patients but one recovered (95% efficacy). 15 patients (75%) showed full recovery after 3 weeks of treatment, while 20% needed 5 weeks for complete recovery. One patient did not respond, was ovariohysterectomized and recovered. After 5 weeks, almost all patients showed mean leukocyte numbers within range. No side effects of treatments were observed..
