In vitro growth of sheep preantral follicles: Which perspectives?

Mammal ovaries have millions of primary and secondary follicles that represent the source of mature gametes in adult animals. Only after a long growth phase will these follicles produce a fertilizable oocyte that is able to sustain embryo development. For these reasons the in-vitro growth of primary and secondary follicles represents an important target for reproductive technology as a strategy able to increase the number of fertilizable oocytes. The major application of this biotechnology in veterinary science is to protect dying species and to conserve the genetic inheritance of important animals, whereas in human medicine it is a way to preserve fertility of young cancer patients and in women at risk of premature ovary loss.
