Addiction, Freedom, and Responsibility

In his article supporting an evolutionary perspective of free will, John Banja (2015) argues that addicts are responsible for their addictive behaviors because they could engage in practices that would diminish the chances that they would act on their cravings. While such a perspective is not unusual-indeed, many psychologists believe that addicts are responsible for the their consumption of their drugs of choice (Buckwalter 2014)-it assumes a view of personal freedom that Banja is specifically arguing against.
