The Case of the National Library of Jamaicain Implementing and Administering the LegalDeposit of Audiovisual and MultimediaMaterials

Legal Deposit enforces a legal obligation onnational publishers to deposit with designatedinstitutions copies of any materials producedfor public use, whether for distribution, lease orsale. Among the inherent responsibilities of thislegislation is the need to safeguard the culturalheritage in audiovisual recordings. According tothe Guidelines developed by the InternationalAssociation of Sound and Audiovisual Archives(IASA), the purpose of legal deposit is to enablethe collection and preservation of all publishedworks of significance to current and futureresearch; to provide continued availability forstudy; as well as to facilitate the compilation ofa national bibliography of published materials(IASA Policy Guidelines, 2006).
