Milton Keynes is often regarded as one of the most successful new towns. One reason for this is its excellent location, says the council's head of transport innovation Brian Matthews. "We are at a national crossroads, half way between Birmingham and London and between Oxford and Cambridge," he says. "Our 1967 masterplan took us to a population of 200,000 but the city didn't stand still. We have ambitions to try and grow to over 400,000 by 2050."
