City trees take a beating. No one knows this better than tree care professionals. They are first responders when urban forests are hit by high winds, ice storms, heat waves, drought and disease. But the biggest threat to trees in cities, towns and suburbs is progress. Urban trees are being removed more quickly than they are being replaced, resulting in the net loss of about 4 million trees annually, according to a recent study by the United States Forest Service. Development is the biggest cause of tree-canopy decline, with few incentives to protect trees from being removed for new houses, roads and office parks.
