Horsepower, torque, acceleration, top speed-measures associated with machines that develop vast amounts of power and move with great speed have captured imaginations since the Industrial Revolution. Relative to automobiles, top speed is the handiest measure; the first land speed record (LSR) was recorded in 1898 when Gaston de Chasseloup-Laubat achieved 39.24 miles per hour (MPH) in an electric-powered Jeantaud.
