摘要

Like many big cities, Chicago goes by many nicknames. The Windy City and Second City are probably the oldest and best known. The winds coming off Lake Michigan and endless bragging by its inhabitants a century or so ago are the likely origins of the first; its status as the second-largest U.S. city (for most of the 20th century, anyway) is the origin of the second. Its contingent of blue-collar, hardworking, salt-of-the-earth people led to two other nicknames: the City of Big Shoulders and The City That Works. Because it is centrally Ideated and a big transportation hub, some call it the Heart of America. Its setting influenced two more; nicknames—City by the Lake and City in a Garden—and the bone-chilling winter of 2014 led to a temporary nickname, Chi-beria. Not bad for a place originally called Shikaakwa, an Algonquian word that refers to the wild onions, garlic, or leeks, or all three, that grew in the area before it was developed.
