The Candelaria District Mineral County, Nevada

Bonanza silver ore made the Candelaria District one of Nevada's largest silver producers in the late 1870s, but by the 1890s decline had set in, and by the early 20th century Candelaria had become a ghost town. But in 1980 two new open pits were started. The Mount Diablo pit has produced fine microcrystals of azurite, olivenite and the best annabergite in the United States. The Northern Belle pit has yielded an unusual assemblage of magnesium phosphates including collinsite, gordonite, montgomeryite, overite and whitlockite. It is also the type locality for whiteite-(CaMgMg).
