It's hard to imagine someone who could fill the position more effectively than T.J., but I know the next student editor will be great. And they will make the position their own. The student editor's two-year term allows them the chance to see the magazine through an entire editorial cycle, and then apply lessons learned in the second year. If you are looking for the basic requirements of the position, there are some details on the back cover of this issue. But informally, after observing successful traits in our student editors, here are the most important strengths: The student editor lets others shine. The student editor delights in being a cheerleader. The student editor is skilled at being a ringmaster-and, in a pinch, a lion tamer. The student editor stands ready to jump in, but is honest with themselves about their limitations. Hie student editor takes interest in all manner of topics, and feeds their intellectual curiosity by listening to others. The student editor speaks up when there's a concern over value, a conflict of interest, or a missing piece to a puzzle. The student editor works with staff, and is flexible and understanding of their needs-while also holding staff members to account as needed. The student editor takes pride in the publication, and in their team.
