Decellularized tissues are commonly utilized as tissue engineering scaffolds. Decellularization by extended exposure to aqueous detergents can damage the microstructure or deposit cytotoxic residue. Supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO(2)) has been proposed for decellularization, but reportedly causes dehydration and scaffold embrittlement.
