China and South Korea buck global trend in scrap usage

Ferrous scrap usage for crude steel production rose in China and South Korea in the first quarter of this year in sharp contrast to other countries, which mostly recorded declines, latest figures from the Bureau of International Recycling (BIR) show. Scrap consumption rose 6.6% in China to 22.7mt in Q1, although the gain was smaller than the 9.1% upturn in crude steel production to 191.9mt.
