Training Health Care Administrators Through a Clinically Focused Disaster Simulation

摘要

This article describes a novel approach to bringing together postgraduate administrative fellows, administrative staff, health sciences and medical students, and community members through disaster simulation-based training at an academic medical center. Of note, the authors describe leveraging an evidence-based communication model (Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety) and effective team debriefing tools that have been used primarily by clinical team members to date. Administrative engagement with this communication model has been traditionally limited to evaluation or change management and not as active participants of the team using it. This simulation experience provides an empowering framework for administrators to use in bringing clinical and nonclinical team members out of their respective silos and in communicating important information. This approach can be readily replicated in other organizations or academic settings.
