Introduction of Patchouli, Pogostemon cablin (Blanco) Benth: An Essential Oil Bearing Plant in Bangladesh

Three field experiments were conducted during 1998-2000 to study the adaptability of patchouli Pogostemon cablin (Blanco) Benth (= P, Patchouli Pellet, var, Suavis Hook. f. ) to the edapho-climatic condition of Chittagong, Bangladesh. Results of threeyears experimental data conclusively revealed that Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin) adapted suitably in the Chittagong zones of Bangladesh. The dry leaves of patchouli contain 3.10% essential oil. GCMS studies revealed that oil contains 49.06% Patchouli alcohol, 3.11% beta patchoulene, 5.24% alpha patchoulene and 14.34% alpha bulnesene.
