Few senior Conservatives defend Britain's membership of the European Union as passionately as Lord Deben, the UK's longest-serving secretary of state for the environment. John Gummer was MP for Suffolk Coastal from 1997 until 2010, when he joined the House of Lords. Lord Deben is chairman of Sancroft International, a consultancy that specialises in corporate social responsibility and environmental issues. He sat down with The Environment at Sancroft's offices in central London, off St James Park. Brexit will be 'disastrous' for UK air and water quality, for farmers and for conservation, Lord Deben warns.
