Tomatoes

Tomatoes (Solarium lycopersicum) originated in South and Central America, and were domesticated by the time the Spanish conquered the Aztecs in the early 16th century. The Spanish brought tomatoes to Europe, where their cultivation spread through Mediterranean countries, reaching Britain by the end of the 16th century. There was widespread belief that tomatoes had little culinary potential, so it wasn't until the second half of the 18th century that they were commonly eaten, both raw or cooked, in the UK.
