Alfred Jost was born in 1916. His father died when Alfred was 13 years old and his mother, unable to care financially for 4 sons, made plans for Alfred to live with his grandmother. She was making plans to apprentice the boy to a local grocer. A neighbor, Madame Oguse, offered instead to let Alfred live with her. Her husband, a professor of Ancient Greek at the University of Strasbourg, was impressed by the boy's intellect and began to tutor him in his studies. He rose from the bottom of his class to the top, paving the way to enrollment in the Ecole Normale Superieure. His academic career was on its way. In addition, the Oguse family provided Alfred with his wife, their youngest daughter, a union that endured more than 50 years.
