Polydrusus planifrons Gyllenhal, 1834 (Curculionidae, Entiminae) in Britain

Polydrusus planifrons Gyllenhal (Fig. 1) will be a weevil name known only to a very few British coleopterists. Fowler (1891) included the species but Joy (1932) omitted it, possibly on the basis that it was thought to be long extinct. Kloet & Hincks (1945) included it as a synonym of P. prasinus (Olivier, 1790), as did Pope (1977) who marked it as probably extinct. Hodge & Jones (1995) reminded us of its place on the British list, but recent checklists (Morris, 2008; 2012; Duff, 2018) excluded it from the main list as 'very doubtfully British' and neither Morris (1997) nor Duff (2016) included it in their keys. In Britain, the name P. planifrons was superseded by P. prasinus (Olivier), since Kloet & Hincks (1945) or earlier, but according to L?bl & Smetana (2013) prasinus is a junior homonym. Throughout this paper, apart from references to some historical literature, the species is referred to as P. planifrons. It is certainly to be found in Britain today.
