Recruited by fertiliser,explosives and industrial chemicals manufacturer Incitec Pivot(IPL),Pipe Tek was tasked with inspecting a 600 m,4 inch(101.6 mm)diameter sulphuric acid pipeline running under the Brisbane River from the IPL's manufacturing plant on Gibson Island in Brisbane,Queensland.The purpose of the operation was to carry out an inspection using an internal inline inspection(ILI)tool to verify remaining wall thickness,identify any internal or external defects,corrosion,or mechanical damage,and assess the overall integrity to ensure the continued safe operation of the pipeline.Before inspection procedures could begin,the sulphuric acid inside the pipeline had to first be removed as any mixture of the acid with water would result in a catastrophic failure due to its highly exothermic hydration reaction.
