Iatrogenic Intercostal Pulmonary Hernia Repaired Using a Combination of Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Technique and Mini-Thoracotomy

Iatrogenic intercostal hernias are extremely rare cases of thoracic pathology and usually develop when the ribcage is violated. They are more common after minimal access surgical techniques such as video-assisted thoracoscopy (VATS), than after open thoracotomy. This may be because of inadequate closure of the chest wall. Symptomatic cases necessitate surgical intervention to prevent possible incarceration or strangulation of the lung tissue, respiratory failure, or for alleviation of symptoms like chronic pain.
