The diagnosis of Hirschsprung's disease in adulthood is seldom made. It is, however, more common in youth with 90 per cent of diagnoses being made in patients during their childhood years, more specifically before the age five years. Hirschsprung's disease characteristically occurs in the rectum or sigmoid and is classified as an aganglionic portion of bowel.
