The illegal pesticide market in Brazil was worth around $540 million last year, some 9% of the national agrochemical market, business newswire Valor Economico reports. The figures have been collated from police and Ministry of the Environment protection agency, the Ibama, operations. In the first three months of 2010, official hauls of illegal pesticides rose by 71% compared with the same period last year. The national agrochemical industry trade association, the Sindag, says that almost 11 tonnes were apprehended in the period against 6.4 tonnes last year. That was similar to the first quarter of 2008, which had seen a jump from the previous year (Agrow No 541, p 17). Recent hauls have been as small as 200 g, and as much as 1,000 litres, according to the Sindag.
