Cultural Treasures Washed Away

FOR centuries, sometimes millennia, the monuments of Europe have withstood earthquake, fire and plundering. Now cultural treasures ranging from the Colosseum to Westminster Abbey face new threats from climate change. Heavier rain in northern Europe threaten to wash away layer after layer of ancient stone, while rising heat in southern and central Europe could lead age-old monuments to crack and disintegrate, according to an EU-funded study in seven European countries.
