Promoting a healthy lifestyle among young families with Immigrant background. An overview of information material and media in Germany

Background. Communication and language problems might pose a problem in reaching families with a migration background regarding measures of prevention and health promotion. Objectives. A research of information material and media for pregnant women and families with migration background in Germany was performed, using the example of nutrition and physical activity during pregnancy and early childhood (0-3 years). Materials and method. A nonsystematic online search and a search within relevant databases were performed. Also, all persons contributing to the "working group: migration", which was initiated by the "Healthy Start-Young Family Network" were approached and further contact persons were contacted using a snowballing technique. Results. In total, 56 different types of information materials for families with migration background were identified. The majority {n - 21) focused on aspects of infant nutrition (breast feeding/bottle feeding). Most materials were translated into the following languages: Turkish, Russian, English, French, and Arabic. The vast majority of the information materials were identical to that in German. There were only a few cases where illustrations and design of the materials had been adapted. Conclusions. It is unclear whether a simple 1:1 translation might adequately address special cultural characteristics, specific information needs, or specific concepts of health/disease. Moreover, there is debate on whether a migration-sensitive, inclusive approach to health promotion might be preferred to a migration-specific, rather exclusive approach. Despite some limitations, this research provides an appropriate overview of the currently available information and increases awareness for this topic, which is also expected to remain important in Germany in the future.
