With one or two exceptions most of the African Swine Fever cases in Europe have occurred in wild boar or in small backyard farms readily accessed by wild boar.On April 6, an outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) was confirmed on a farm in Poland with 10,000 fattening pigs that is outside the area where ASF has been occurring in wild boar. The farm is owned by Smithfield, the now Chinese owned US company. The source of the infection was a group of ASF positive pigs shipped in mid-March from an infected sow farm.It is likely that the affected pigs were about 14-15 weeks old and had been incubating infection for at least two weeks.
