摘要

Mediterranean populations have been baking and enjoying various forms of flatbread-based "pizzas" layered with various toppings for more than a millennium. Although archeologists and food historians believe that some of the first types of pizza were likely sweet, most contemporary varieties eaten around the world tend to be savory, with tomato sauce and cheese as their most basic elements. Pizza likely arrived on American soil during the late 1800s with the influx of homesick and hardworking Italian immigrants who often settled in "Little Italy" neighborhoods, such as those that flourished in Chicago and New York City. Since that time, pizza has become an increasingly popular food and snack item in the United States, especially among teens and young adults. But how much pizza do Americans actually eat, and does it contribute positively or negatively to our individual and collective nutritional status?
