In this article, the flame-retardant materials and flame-retardant system as a reference for flame retardant unsaturated polyester (UP) have been provided. To date, with the help of some layered nano-materials, the electrical, mechanical, thermal stability, and fire-retardant properties of a large number of composite materials can be significantly improved. Here, the graphite phase carbon nitride (g-C3N4) combined with cerium oxide (CeO2) have been successfully synthesized and as a filling material into UP, could improve flame-retardant performance. The structure and morphology of the composites were confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron microscopy, at the same time, the effect of Van der Waals' force in the reunite and stacking of the UP were also studied by scanning electron microscope. Moreover, the combustion performance test of composites through thermogravimetry analysis and microscale combustion calorimeter, the preparation of flame retardancy groups, the functionalization of materials, which revealed that the synthesized flame-retardant materials had better performance. The results have indicated that the peak heat release rate of flame-retardant materials reduced 33.6% than pure UP. After adding preciously little layered nanomaterial, the flame retardancy of composites is better than before, which is a novel route to improve fire safety.
