Plantation Commodities: A Stock Taking 2017-18

The world tea production after crossing the five billion kilo milestone in 2014, added another half a billion kilo in short span of three years to reach 5,686.4 m.kg during 2017. The growth in production across tea growing destinations were aided by the increase in area under tea, usage of improved planting materials, employing advanced technology and adopting integrated package of practice for tea cultivation. The growth in world tea production of this magnitude has happened mainly due to the increase in production from China, suggesting that the increase in world tea crop was by and large confined to the green tea segment whereas the black tea production though reported gains was accompanied by fluctuations in the crop prospects across black tea producing origins.
