Evaluation of fungicides programs to control black shank on tobacco, Edgecombe County, NC, 2018

Ten fungicide rotation systems for the control of flue-cured tobacco black shank were assessed at the Upper Coastal Plain Research Station with a Norfolk loamy sand soil. The trial was transplanted on 3 May into 4-row, 50-ft long plots with 5ft alleysarranged in a randomized complete block design with 4 replicates All management practices outside of disease management followed North Carolina Cooperative Extension recommendations for flue-cured tobacco. Treatments were applied either in transplant water drenches (TPW) or using a CO2 pressurized backpack sprayer equipped with XR110025 nozzle at 20 gal/A at 20 psi, then later mechanically incorporated during cultivation. Application dates were 3 May, 7 June and 29 June for TPW, and at first cultivation and layby (second cultivation) for other treatments, respectively. Disease incidence was assessed every two weeks beginning four weeks after transplant. Data were summarized as area under disease progress curve (AUDPC) and final percent disease incidence and were analyzed using a linear mixed effects model using the 'nlme' package in R. Linear contrasts were calculated using the 'emmeans' package and p-values were adjusted for multiple comparisons with the Tukey method.
